The Cheaper Home Batteries Program – What’s Changing from 1 May 2026
From 1 May 2026, the Australian Government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program introduces updated rules that impact how solar battery rebates are calculated across Australia.
The program continues to support households and businesses in reducing energy costs, offering around a 30% reduction in upfront battery costs through the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES).
While the incentive remains strong, the structure of the rebate is evolving – making expert advice and system design more important than ever.
How Does the Battery Rebate Actually Work?
The rebate is delivered through Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) rather than a direct payment.
- The number of STCs determines the value of your rebate
• The discount is applied upfront to reduce system cost
• The rebate is based on your battery’s usable capacity (kWh)

The Biggest Change on 1 May 2026
Tiered Support Based on Battery Size
The rebate is now applied across three capacity tiers:
- 0–14 kWh – 100% of the STC factor applied
• 14–28 kWh – 60% of the STC factor applied
• 28–50 kWh – 15% of the STC factor applied
This structure:
• Favourably supports standard residential battery sizes
• Still allows larger systems, but with reduced incentives

Despite the changes, the program is designed to maintain:
- Around 30% savings on typical battery installations
• Strong support for energy independence and storage adoption
• A reduction in rebates every 6 months until 2030 (installing earlier gets you the highest rebates possible)
Who Is Eligible?
The program is available Australia-wide for:
- Residential homes, businesses, and community organisations
• New or existing solar systems
• Battery systems between 5 kWh and 100 kWh
To qualify:
• Approved battery products must be used
• Installation must be completed by accredited professionals
