Here’s the bottom line and clear truth: you can get solar & batteries installed with RESINC for no money out of pocket using a variety of Green Loan options. Of course eligibility criteria apply, however the way this option works – in general – is that you can have your high performance solar & battery system installed, and pay it off with small weekly or monthly payments, allowing you to free up money that you would have been otherwise throwing away on your electricity bills to your energy retailer, and redirect some of those savings towards paying off your power station.
On top of the ability to install a system for $0 upfront, there are also significant rebates in place to help reduce the overall cost of going solar & batteries, which means that in many cases, the amount you’re saving on your electricity bills can be greater than your solar repayments… or in other words, a high quality solar & battery system can pay for itself!
For this to be true, the system has to produce electricity consistently, and this is where many people come unstuck, opting for the cheapest deal upfront, and then facing problems down the line when they have issues with their systems and can’t get their original installer to come and fix it. To help our team of solar specialists do their homework in advance and make the most of their time with you, it’s beneficial (but not an absolute must) if you can share with us your recent electricity bills as well as an image of the interior of your meter box.
Your electricity bills help us gain an understanding of your usage patterns, who your energy retailer is, the rates that they are charging you and if you have a solar system on your roof already it also tells us how much of that power you are not using and is being exported to the grid. In the case of retro-fitting or adding batteries to an existing solar system this helps us understand how much power you could potentially be storing for your own use at night (instead of giving it to your energy company for ever-decreasing feed-in tariff rates.)
FAQs
1. Are there any rebates available?
Yes, there certainly are! There are federal rebates available for both solar and battery systems.
For solar panels, the rebate comes through what’s called the STC program, which has been around since 2009. The size of your system, your location, and the year you install it all determine how much of a discount you get. The good news? It’s applied upfront, so you don’t have to wait for it. The not-so-good news? The value drops every year on January 1 – which is why there’s always a big rush at the end of each year.
Battery rebates are a newer addition. From 1 July 2025, the federal government introduced a nationwide battery rebate that offers an upfront discount based on how much usable storage your system has – up to 50 kWh. At time of writing, that can be worth up to $18,500.
Something we take seriously is designing the right system for your needs while also making sure you’re maximising every dollar you’re eligible for through these rebates which are currently slated to retire in 2030.
2. How does solar actually save me money?
It all comes down to one simple idea: the less electricity you have to buy from the grid, the more you save. Power prices keep climbing, so being able to avoid buying electricity from your energy retailer is where solar (and batteries) really shine.
Here’s how it works in practice. When the sun hits your solar panels, they generate power. That power runs through an inverter, which converts it into the kind of electricity your home can use straight away – powering everything from your lights to your air con to your dishwasher.
If your solar system is generating enough to meet your needs at that moment, you won’t be buying any electricity from the grid. If you’ve also got a battery, any extra solar power can be stored for later. Then at night, or when the sun isn’t doing its job, your battery can power the home instead. Only if your solar and battery can’t keep up will you automatically draw from the grid – no switches to flick, it all happens in the background.
Now, we’re all about honesty, so here’s the deal: no system can cover absolutely everything if your usage spikes. If you’re blasting the ducted air con, charging the EV, running the underfloor heating, and firing up the hairdryer all at once, you’ll probably need to pull a bit from the grid. That’s why we focus on designing a system around your actual usage, goals, and future plans – to minimise how often that happens.
And if your solar produces more than you need, and your battery’s full, that excess can be exported back to the grid. You’ll get a small credit for it – called a feed-in tariff. That said, it’s always more valuable to use that power in the home, store it, or direct it to something like your electric hot water system.
That’s how solar and batteries work together to cut your power bills and give you more control over your energy future.
3. How do batteries work?
The easiest way to think about a solar battery is like a giant water tank – but for electricity. It’s there to store the excess solar energy your home doesn’t use at the time it’s generated, so you can use it later when the sun isn’t shining.
Here’s how that plays out in practice:
Let’s say your solar system is producing 5 kilowatt-hours of electricity, but your home only needs 2 at that moment. The other 3 don’t go to waste – they get stored in your battery for later. Then, once the sun goes down or your power usage goes up, your battery can automatically step in and supply the energy you need.
This all happens behind the scenes using the battery’s built-in energy management system. No switches to flick, no settings to mess with – it just works.
Now, during normal day-to-day use, that’s how it all flows. But what about a blackout? That depends on how your battery is installed and set up. Many batteries can be configured to run essential appliances during an outage, giving you a bit of energy independence when the grid goes down, and others can be configured to prepare you for a zombie apocalypse! It all comes down to your requirements and goals.

4. Do I need a battery?
You might not. A solar system without a battery can still do a brilliant job reducing your power bills by letting you use solar energy in real time. That’s why over four million Australian homes already have solar – even without batteries.
But here’s the thing: if you’re not using the power your panels are generating at the exact time it’s being made, and your system isn’t storing it, that excess power gets sent back to the grid (if your network allows it). You’ll get a feed-in tariff for that power – but it’s usually only a fraction of what you pay to buy electricity back. Doesn’t seem like a fair trade, right?
The reason energy retailers can’t pay you the same rate is because your power bill includes more than just the cost of electricity. There’s network infrastructure, maintenance, and operational costs built in. Whether that seems fair or not doesn’t change it – but what does matter is that the technology exists today to help you avoid buying a heap of grid power in the first place.
So, do you need a battery? It really depends on what you’re looking to achieve. If you want to make the most of your solar by using excess energy later at night, cover yourself during blackouts, or just boost your energy independence, a battery can absolutely help with that. That’s why more and more people are adding them to existing solar systems, or including them right from day one.
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer here – and that’s a good thing. What matters most is your opinion and your goals. We’ll work with you to design a system that actually fits your home and what you’re hoping to achieve, whether that includes a battery or not.
5. What happens if there’s a power outage?
If you’ve got a solar system without a battery, it’ll automatically shut off during a power outage. That might sound frustrating, but it’s actually a requirement – and it’s all about safety and protecting your appliances.
Here’s why:
- Safety for lineworkers: When the grid goes down, crews are out there working to get things back online. If solar systems were still pushing power back into the grid during that time, it would put those workers at serious risk.
- Protection for your home: Most household appliances need a steady, reliable flow of electricity. Solar production naturally fluctuates throughout the day, so if the grid isn’t there to stabilise it, your appliances could be at risk of damage.
So unless you’ve got a battery, your solar system has to switch off during a blackout. No way around it.
Now, if you do have a battery, that’s a different story.
As part of your battery installation, we include a battery changeover switch and work with you to set things up so your battery can power essential parts of your home during a blackout. This is all tailored to your specific setup and priorities – things like the fridge, Wi-Fi, lights, or garage door are commonly backed up, while high-draw appliances like ducted air con or pool pumps usually aren’t.
Everything’s configured case-by-case, based on your battery size and what matters most to you during an outage. That way, you’ve got a bit of peace of mind knowing that if the grid goes down, your essentials don’t have to.

6. What’s a virtual power plant? (VPP)
A Virtual Power Plant, or VPP, is basically a network of solar and battery systems that are linked together and controlled remotely to act like one big power plant. Instead of being located in a single place like a coal or gas station, the “plant” is made up of thousands of homes and businesses with batteries – all connected through the internet or cloud.
When demand on the electricity grid is high – like during a heatwave when everyone’s running air conditioning – the VPP operator can draw on the stored energy from participating batteries and feed that power back into the grid. This helps stabilise the energy supply and can reduce the need for expensive and polluting backup power sources.
In return, participating households are often paid a bonus or receive credits for the energy they supply. Depending on the VPP, you might also get other benefits like ongoing bill credits, or performance guarantees. That said, the rules and rewards vary from one program to the next – and not all batteries or energy retailers support all VPPs.
Importantly, you don’t have to join a VPP to get a battery rebate – but the battery you install does need to be VPP-compatible. That just means it has the right tech should you choose to join a VPP now or in the future.
In short:
- A VPP is a virtual network of solar batteries helping support the grid
- You can get paid or rewarded for participating
- You’re still in control – most VPPs let you opt in or out
- The battery rebate requires VPP compatibility, not VPP participation

7. What happens if I move a few years after installing solar or a battery?
Installing solar and battery systems can make your home more attractive to buyers. According to a recent Domain report, energy-efficient homes are selling for a significant premium in some areas, and listings with energy-efficient features are attracting nearly 20% more views online.
“In Queensland suburbs, including Calamvale in Brisbane’s south and Robina on the Gold Coast, houses are selling for up to $300,000 more than non-efficient homes, according to the report.”
RESINC’s warranty coverage is fully transferable to the new owner, adding further value to your property.
If you installed your system with a $0 upfront plan and are still paying it off, any remaining balance would be settled at the time of sale, similar to paying out a mortgage.
