Homeowners across New South Wales now have access to a major new initiative designed to make energy-efficient home upgrades more affordable than ever before.
The NSW Government has officially launched the $557 million Home Energy Saver Program (HESP), introducing interest-free loans and future rebates to help households invest in solar power, battery storage, insulation and other energy-saving improvements.
The announcement marks one of the state’s largest investments in household energy efficiency and aims to reduce energy bills while supporting the transition to cleaner energy.
Interest-Free Loans Available Now
From today, eligible homeowners can apply for interest-free loans of up to $15,000 per property to fund approved energy efficiency upgrades.
The loans can be repaid over a 10-year period, significantly reducing the upfront financial barrier that often prevents families from investing in solar and battery technology.
The program covers a range of improvements, including:
- Solar panel systems
- Home battery storage
- Ceiling and wall insulation
- Other approved energy efficiency upgrades
For many households, this means they can start saving on electricity bills immediately while spreading the installation cost over an extended period.
Additional Discounts Coming Later in 2026
The NSW Government has also confirmed that discounts of up to $4,000 will become available later in 2026 for eligible low-income households and concession card holders.
The additional financial support is expected to make solar and energy efficiency upgrades even more accessible for families who need assistance with rising living costs.
The program also includes provisions allowing renters to participate with their landlord’s permission, expanding access beyond owner-occupiers.
Industry Welcomes the Initiative
RESINC CEO Leigh Storr attended the official program launch alongside NSW Premier Chris Minns, Minister for Energy Penny Sharpe, Member for Mount Druitt Edmund Atalla MP, and Smart Energy Council CEO David McElrea.
The announcement has been widely welcomed by the renewable energy industry, with the initiative expected to accelerate the adoption of solar and battery systems across New South Wales.
The Smart Energy Council has also partnered with the NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) and the NSW Energy Security Corporation (ESC) to provide further information to industry members on how the scheme will operate for businesses and consumers.
By combining interest-free finance with future rebates for eligible households, the initiative removes one of the biggest barriers to installing solar and battery systems – the upfront cost.
As demand for renewable energy continues to grow, the new program is expected to help thousands of NSW households take greater control of their energy bills while contributing to a more sustainable energy future.
