How Do Solar and Batteries Work?

Understanding how solar and battery systems work doesn’t need to be complicated. In fact, once you break it down, it’s pretty straightforward – and once it clicks, it’s easy to see how it all adds up to real savings and energy independence.

Solar panels are made up of photovoltaic (PV) cells that capture sunlight and turn it into electricity. That electricity is in DC (direct current) form, which isn’t the type your home uses.

The solar-generated DC power flows to your inverter, which converts it into AC (alternating current) – that’s the standard form of electricity used by your lights, appliances, air con, and everything else in your home.

Once converted, your home will always look to use your solar power first. This happens automatically – there’s no switching or managing on your part. If the solar panels are producing enough to cover your needs, you’re running on sunshine, not grid power.

If your solar system is producing more than your home needs at that moment, the extra electricity can:

  • Charge your battery (if you have one), so you can use that power later – especially handy after the sun goes down
  • Get sent back to the grid (if allowed), earning you a small credit from your energy retailer called a feed-in tariff

If the sun’s not out or your power usage spikes beyond what your solar system (and battery) can supply, your home will automatically draw electricity from the grid – again, no switches to flick, it’s all seamless.

What does this mean for you?

The more solar energy you use in the home, the less you need to buy from your energy retailer. And with grid electricity prices only going one way – up – that’s where the real savings come from.

Add a battery, and you can store excess power for later use instead of buying it back at a higher price later on. You also gain a level of energy independence, especially in a blackout (more on that below).

How Do Batteries Work?

Think of a solar battery like a water tank for electricity. When your solar panels produce more power than your home needs, that excess gets stored in your battery. Later, when your panels aren’t generating enough – say at night or on cloudy days – your home can draw on the stored energy instead of buying it.

This all happens automatically, thanks to the battery’s built-in energy management system.

And if there’s a blackout? Depending on how your battery is installed and configured, it can be set up to run essential appliances like lights, Wi-Fi, and the fridge. Do I Need a Battery?

You might – or you might not.

Plenty of households across Australia have solar without batteries and still save a lot. But if your goal is to reduce grid reliance even further, or to have backup power during outages, a battery makes a lot of sense.

It really depends on what you’re trying to achieve. That’s why we don’t take a one-size-fits-all approach – your goals, your budget, and your usage patterns shape the system we design for you.

What Happens If There’s a Power Outage?

If you’ve only got solar (no battery), your system will shut off during a blackout. This is a safety requirement to protect grid workers and your appliances – so power doesn’t accidentally get pushed back out into the grid while crews are working on it.

But if you’ve got a battery, you’re in a better position. We’ll install a battery changeover switch and work with you to decide which essential circuits should be backed up. That might include things like lighting, your modem, fridge, or the garage door. Larger appliances like air con or pool pumps usually stay off during a blackout unless you’ve got a seriously large battery setup.
