# Federal Battery Rebate Increases to $7.2bn

The Federal Government has confirmed a major expansion of the Cheaper Home Batteries Program, increasing total funding from $2.3bn to $7.2bn over the next four years. Alongside this investment, the rebate structure will shift to ensure the program remains financially sustainable and accessible to more Australian households.

For homeowners considering a battery, these changes are important to understand. The timing of your installation and the size of the system you choose will directly affect how much support you receive.

### How the Federal Battery Rebate Is Changing

The expanded budget aims to support more than two million home battery installations by 2030, doubling the original forecast. This rollout is expected to add 40 gigawatt hours of energy storage nationwide, supporting the retirement of coal plants and enabling higher renewable penetration across the grid.

To make the rebates last longer, the Government will introduce a new reduction schedule from **May 2026**, where the STC factor (which determines the value of the rebate) drops **every six months**, rather than once per year.

Here are the proposed STC factors for 2026–2030:

• January–April 2026: 8.4
 • May–December 2026: 6.8
 • January–June 2027: 5.7
 • July–December 2027: 5.2
 • January–June 2028: 4.6
 • July–December 2028: 4.1
 • January–June 2029: 3.6
 • July–December 2029: 3.1
 • January–June 2030: 2.6
 • July–December 2030: 2.1

The clear outcome is that rebate value will gradually shrink as the program progresses.

### Why the Scheme Is Being Updated

Data from the first year of the program showed that the rebate was being consumed far more quickly than expected. A major factor has been the sharp rise in average battery size. Since October, the median system installed has been around **28kWh**, compared with **10–12kWh** one year earlier.

Because the rebate is issued per kWh of usable capacity, larger systems have accelerated the spend dramatically. Left unchanged, the original $2.3bn allocation would have been exhausted by mid 2026.

The updated scheme is intended to encourage right-sized systems that match household needs rather than oversized installations that inflate rebate drawdown.

### New Tapering Rules for Larger Batteries

From May 2026, the rebate will only fully apply to smaller and medium-sized systems. Larger batteries will still be eligible, but at a significantly reduced rate.

The new structure is:

**• 0–14 kWh:** 100% of the STC factor
 • **14–28 kWh:** 60% of the STC factor
 • **28–50 kWh:** 15% of the STC factor

Batteries up to 100 kWh can still be installed, but only the first 50 kWh of usable capacity will receive STCs.

This is expected to prevent oversizing, reduce mismatched designs, and ensure the program reaches more households nationwide.

### Industry Response: Predictable and Fair

The Smart Energy Council and leading manufacturers have largely welcomed the changes. Crucially, the new rules do not take effect until **May 2026**, giving sufficient notice to homeowners and installers.

### A Major Win for Australia’s Energy Storage Capacity

Since the scheme launched on 1 July, nearly **160,000 home batteries** have been installed across the country. Uptake has been strongest in regional communities and outer suburban areas, demonstrating broad national interest in energy independence and lower power bills.

Energy Minister Chris Bowen has confirmed that the program is outperforming expectations and is helping position Australia as a global leader in distributed energy storage.

### What This Means for RESINC Solar & Batteries Customers

For homeowners across Australia, the next 12–18 months may offer the strongest rebate value before the twice-yearly reductions begin. The new tapering model also reinforces the importance of choosing a battery size that matches your household’s real energy usage, rather than simply opting for the largest option available.

As a national leader in solar and battery systems – and Australia’s most community-focused installer – RESINC Solar & Batteries can help you design a system that delivers long-term value, reliable performance, and maximum rebate benefits.
