# Can You Add a Battery to Your Existing Solar System in NSW?

![Anker Solix X1 home battery](https://resinc.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Anker_1.jpeg)

Most existing solar systems in NSW can have a battery added without replacing the panels. Whether it’s straightforward or needs extra work depends on your inverter, your switchboard and how you use power day to day. Many homes can use an AC-coupled battery, and depending on the battery size and property type, some may also be eligible for the federal battery rebate.

## Key Takeaways

- Most existing solar systems in NSW can be upgraded with solar battery storage without replacing the panels, though not every setup is suitable.
- The Cheaper Home Batteries Program may offer a discount on eligible battery installations for existing solar homes. Rebate values change every 6 months. Verify current figures with our team before making a final decision.
- Your inverter type largely determines the retrofit approach: AC coupling or a hybrid inverter upgrade.
- RESINC installs Sungrow SBR and SBH, Anker SOLIX, FranklinWH and Sigenergy SigenStor batteries, all of which can suit existing NSW solar and battery systems depending on your setup.
- Not every existing system is a good retrofit candidate. We’ll cover when a battery may not be the right move too.

## Introduction

Your solar panels have been doing their job for a while now. But if you don’t have a battery, some of the power they generate during the day is going back to the grid at a feed-in tariff rate that’s usually a lot lower than what you pay to buy electricity back.

From our experience at RESINC, this is one of the most common conversations we have with NSW homeowners who installed solar a few years ago and never got around to adding storage. Solar and battery storage go together for a reason, and a lot of existing systems are sitting there half-finished.

Our installation team regularly sees setups that are perfectly good candidates for a retrofit, and a few that need a bit more thought. This guide walks through what battery retrofit actually means for an NSW home, which inverter types tend to work well, what the rebate covers for existing systems, and how to get a realistic read on whether your setup is ready.

## What Does Adding a Battery to Existing Solar Actually Mean?

Adding a battery to an existing solar system means connecting a battery storage unit to your current setup so it can capture the solar power your home doesn’t use straight away.

Right now, when your panels produce more than your home needs at that moment, the surplus is exported to the grid. Your retailer pays a feed-in tariff for it, and that rate is usually well below what you pay to buy power back in the evening.

A battery changes that. Instead of exporting the surplus, you store it, then draw on it later instead of the grid. Less bought from the grid, more of your own solar actually used.

What makes this possible in your specific case comes down largely to your inverter.

**Is Your Current Inverter Compatible?**

This is one of the first things we check when an NSW homeowner asks us about adding a battery storage system.

Your inverter converts the DC power from your panels into the AC power your home uses. Whether a battery can connect to it, and how, depends on the type of inverter you have and roughly how old it is. At RESINC, we assess this properly on site rather than guessing from a model number over the phone.

| **Existing Setup Type** | **Likely Retrofit Pathway** | **What’s Typically Involved** |
|---|---|---|
| Standard string inverter, several years old | AC coupling | A separate battery inverter is added alongside your existing one |
| Sungrow hybrid inverter | Often direct compatibility | A Sungrow battery may connect with fewer extra parts, subject to assessment |
| Standard string inverter, newer model | AC coupling, sometimes hybrid upgrade | Site assessment needed to confirm the best fit |
| Micro-inverters | AC coupling | A separate battery inverter is generally required |
| Older or underperforming inverter | Possible hybrid inverter upgrade | Replacing the inverter alongside the battery install may make sense |

This table reflects general patterns we see, not guarantees. Every property is a little different, and switchboard condition, cabling and your specific brand all factor in.

**Is a Sungrow inverter battery-ready?**

In many cases, yes. If you already have a Sungrow hybrid inverter, a Sungrow battery can often connect with fewer additional parts. It’s not automatic in every case, so we still confirm this during an assessment rather than assuming compatibility from the brand alone.

## AC Coupling vs Hybrid Inverter Upgrade – Which Do You Need?

This is where a lot of homeowners get confused, so here’s the plain version.

### AC Coupling:

You keep your existing solar inverter. A separate battery inverter is installed alongside it, and the battery charges and discharges through that second unit. It suits a wide range of existing solar setups and is often the lower-cost retrofit path, though it isn’t automatically compatible with every system, and site conditions can affect what’s possible.

### Hybrid Inverter Upgrade:

Your existing inverter is replaced with a hybrid inverter that handles both solar and battery in one unit. Worth considering if your current inverter is old or underperforming, or if you’d rather have a single combined system.

Which one suits you depends on:

- The age and brand of your current inverter
- The battery brand you’re considering
- Whether blackout protection matters to you
- Your existing switchboard configuration

At RESINC, we assess all of this on site. There’s no single right answer that applies to every home, and anyone who gives you one without looking at your system is guessing.

**What happens to my existing solar if I add a battery?**

Your panels and their output aren’t affected by adding a battery. They keep doing what they’ve always done. The battery simply captures what would otherwise be exported, so your system runs more efficiently overall.

## What Batteries Work With Existing Solar Systems?

RESINC installs a small number of battery brands we trust, and each has a different fit depending on your existing setup.

### Sungrow SBR and SBH Series

The Sungrow SBR ranges from 4.8 kWh to 19.2 kWh and suits small to mid-sized homes. The SBH scales from 5 kWh up to 160 kWh in stackable 25 kg modules, and is more commonly used for larger homes, high-demand households or commercial sites. Both use LiFePO4 (Lithium Iron Phosphate) chemistry, run up to 95-97% round-trip efficiency and carry a 10-year warranty. If you already have a Sungrow hybrid inverter, connection is often more direct; otherwise AC coupling is the usual path.

## Who Is This Suitable For?

A battery retrofit tends to make the most sense if a few of these apply to you:

- You’re exporting a lot of solar during the day. If your bills show high export volumes and low feed-in credit, there’s likely surplus power worth capturing.
- Your household uses more power in the evening. Families home after work, evening cooking, heating or cooling, and overnight appliance use are all patterns where a battery gets used properly.
- Your solar system is a few years old and performing well. Older, well-maintained systems with healthy panels are often good retrofit candidates.
- You’re concerned about blackouts. Some battery and inverter combinations can provide backup power during an outage, depending on the setup and changeover switch installed.

These are general patterns, not guarantees for your specific home. At RESINC, we assess your usage and system before recommending anything.

## When a Battery Retrofit May Not Be Suitable

To be upfront about this, a retrofit isn’t automatically the right move for every home. It may not stack up well if:

- Your panels have degraded significantly or the system is underperforming for its age.
- Your household uses very little power in the evening, meaning a battery would rarely get the chance to discharge.
- Switchboard upgrades would add significant cost on top of the battery itself, changing the overall value case.
- You’re planning to move house in the near term and won’t be around to see the return.

We’d rather tell you honestly if a battery isn’t a great fit right now than sell you one that doesn’t suit your situation.

## Does the Federal Rebate Apply to Existing Solar?

Yes, generally. This is one of the most common questions we get, and the Cheaper Home Batteries Program can apply to batteries connected to existing solar systems, not just new installations.

Broadly, what matters for eligibility:

- The property is a home, small business or community organisation
- The battery is between 5 kWh and 100 kWh nominal capacity
- The battery is on the Clean Energy Council approved product list
- Your installer is accredited

The program uses Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) and, as a general guide, can bring around 30% off the upfront battery cost, applied on a tiered basis depending on system size. From 1 May 2026, tier structures apply differently across 0-14 kWh, 14-28 kWh and 28-50 kWh bands, and the value steps down roughly every six months through to 2030. RESINC manages the STC paperwork and applies the discount directly to your invoice.

## A Recent Retrofit – What It Looked Like

**Anonymised RESINC customer, Central Coast NSW**

A household with a 5-year-old string inverter system and no battery came to us after noticing how little their feed-in credit covered their evening usage. Our assessment found the existing inverter wasn’t a direct match for battery connection, so we recommended an AC-coupled Sungrow SBR system rather than a full inverter replacement.

The installation added a separate battery inverter alongside their existing solar inverter, with no changes needed to the panels themselves. The household is now capturing a larger share of their daytime solar generation for evening use instead of exporting it at a low rate. Results vary by household and usage pattern, and this example is illustrative of the retrofit pathway rather than a guaranteed outcome.

## What Does the Installation Process Look Like?

Adding a battery to an existing solar system involves a few clear stages. Here’s what it looks like working with RESINC.

## Is Your Existing Solar System Ready for a Battery?

For most NSW homeowners, yes, a battery retrofit is technically possible. The pathway exists, and the products are there to make it work.

The real question is which approach suits your specific inverter, usage pattern and switchboard, and that’s not something a general article can answer for you. It needs someone to actually look at your system.

RESINC has been helping Australian households get more from their solar since 2016. We’re a Gold Master Electrician business, CEC-accredited, ISO certified, and rated 4.9 stars from 3,015+ Google reviews. We install Sungrow, Anker SOLIX, FranklinWH and Sigenergy SigenStor batteries, and handle the whole process from assessment through to grid connection. We’re also proud of what our work supports off the tools: RESINC has installed over $1,250,000 of solar on Surf Club roofs, saving clubs more than $250,000 a year on power bills.

We serve homeowners across Newcastle, the Central Coast, Lake Macquarie, the Hunter Valley and Maitland. If you’ve had solar on your roof for a while and haven’t looked at battery storage yet, get in touch and we’ll tell you honestly what your system can do.

## FAQs

### Can I add any battery to my existing solar system in NSW?

Not any battery. Compatibility depends on your inverter type and the battery’s coupling requirements. Many NSW homes can add a battery using AC coupling, which suits a wide range of existing inverters. If your inverter is older or underperforming, we may recommend a hybrid inverter upgrade alongside the battery. We confirm compatibility during a free site assessment before recommending anything.

### Will adding a battery affect my existing solar warranty?

Adding a battery does not void your solar panel warranty. Your panel manufacturer’s warranty is separate from your inverter and battery warranties. If a separate battery inverter is installed for AC coupling, that unit carries its own warranty. We confirm warranty implications specific to your system during the assessment.

### How much does it cost to add a battery to existing solar in NSW?

We don’t publish fixed prices, because the total depends on inverter compatibility, battery size, switchboard requirements and whether any electrical upgrades are needed. [solar battery cost NSW](https://www.resinc.com.au/) varies by household, and the federal rebate can reduce the upfront cost for eligible installs. Get a personalised quote based on your actual setup.

### Does RESINC add batteries to existing solar systems in Newcastle?

Yes. This is a regular job for our Newcastle team. We assess your existing inverter, whatever the brand, and recommend the retrofit approach that suits your system. As accredited [solar installation services in Newcastle](https://resinc.com.au/solar-installation-services-newcastle/), we manage the process from assessment to energisation. We also serve [solar battery storage Central Coast](https://resinc.com.au/commercial-solar-pv-panels-central-coast/) households and the wider Hunter region.

### How long does it take to add a battery to an existing solar system?

Installation timeframes vary depending on your system’s complexity, any switchboard work required, product availability and network connection requirements. We’ll give you a realistic estimate once we’ve assessed your setup, rather than quoting a fixed timeframe upfront.

### What if my existing inverter is too old to work with a new battery?

If your inverter isn’t a good match or is underperforming, we can look at replacing it with a hybrid inverter as part of the battery install. We identify this during the site assessment and include it in your quote if it applies.

### Does the battery rebate apply if I already claimed the solar STC rebate?

Generally yes. The Cheaper Home Batteries Program is separate from the STC scheme used for your original solar installation. Claiming the battery rebate doesn’t affect past STC claims, though eligibility rules can change. Rebate values change every 6 months. Verify current figures with our team before making a final decision.
